Setting up the board
8 answers for this part of Tactico. Everything here lives on /app.
How do I change the pitch layout or orientation?
Choose your pitch layout
- Open the board at /app.
- In the left toolbar, click the top icon labelled Field layout.
- A panel opens with Landscape and Portrait buttons at the top. Pick one (only the full and half pitches can turn).
- Below that, pick a pitch type: Full Pitch, Half Pitch, Attacking Third, Quarter Square, or Plain Board. The panel closes and the pitch redraws.
- If you picked Half Pitch or Attacking Third, open Field layout again: a Left/Right switch (Top/Bottom in Portrait) now sits at the bottom of the panel. Choose which side of the pitch to show.
- The pitch redraws immediately with your players and drawings repositioned to fit.
Tips
- Plain Board removes all pitch markings if you just want blank space for a locker-room diagram.
How do I set up a 7v7 or other small-sided game?
Change the match size (5v5 to 11v11)
- Open the board at /app.
- Above the row of numbered player chips (the "chips dock" under the pitch), click the size button that reads "11v11".
- A menu opens with 5v5, 7v7, 8v8, 9v9, 10v10 and 11v11.
- Click the size you want. Both teams switch to that size and the chip dock updates to match. Players over the limit are hidden, not deleted, so going back to 11v11 brings them back.
Tips
- Small-sided shapes (5v5 to 9v9) show up in the Formations tab once you switch the size. Formations are a Pro feature.
How do I move a player on the board?
Move a player
- Open the board at /app.
- Make sure the Select tool is active (the arrow, second in the left toolbar, or press V). It is on when you arrive.
- Press a player chip and drag it to the new spot. On a phone, start dragging right away: if you hold still for a moment, the chip's menu opens instead.
- Let go. The chip stays where you dropped it.
- If you're signed in, the board saves your change automatically on this device. Watch for the "Saved" badge next to the plan name at the top (on a phone the badge is hidden). Signed out, it reads "Sign in to save" and the board is not kept.
Tips
- Hold Shift or Ctrl while clicking chips to select more than one, then drag any of them to move the whole group together.
How do I rename a player or change their name, number or position?
Edit a player's name, number and position
- Open the board at /app.
- Double-click the player's chip on the pitch. A phone has no double-tap: press and hold the chip until a small menu opens, then choose Edit Player.
- The Player Studio window opens with fields for Player Name, Number, Position and Notes.
- Type the player's name, adjust their shirt number, and pick a position from the dropdown (e.g. CB, CAM, ST).
- Optionally add tactical notes for that player.
- Click Save. The chip updates immediately.
Tips
- The same window has a Chip size slider — this resizes every player chip on the pitch, not just the one you opened.
- A Name label style section lets you add a background pill or outline behind player names, and choose whether it applies to just this player, the whole team, or both teams.
How do I add a substitute or remove a player from the pitch?
Add or remove players
- Open the board at /app.
- Below the pitch you'll see a dock with numbered chips for Home and Away. Chips already on the pitch look faded ("placed"); chips not yet placed (usually your substitutes, numbers 12–18) are shown normally.
- Drag an unplaced chip from the dock onto the pitch to bring that player on.
- To take a player off, drag their chip on the pitch onto the trash-can icon in the pitch corner, or click the chip to select it and press Delete (or Backspace).
- A small toolbar also appears above a selected chip with a dedicated Delete button.
- Use the Home subs / Away subs tabs above the substitute row to switch which side's bench you're looking at.
Tips
- Clicking the trash can without dragging anything opens the Clear menu instead of deleting a player.
How do I change my team's kit color?
Change team colors
- Open the board at /app.
- In the chip dock below the pitch, click the round color dot to the left of the Home or Away chip row.
- A color menu opens with ten colors.
- On the Free plan, and when you're not signed in, only the default color for that side is open (red for Home, blue for Away). The other swatches carry a padlock, and clicking one opens the upgrade window (or sign-up if you're signed out).
- On Pro (or during your trial), pick any of the 10 colors per team.
- Click a color to apply it. Every chip on that side updates immediately.
How do I use a formation like 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1?
Apply a preset formation · Pro feature
- Open the board at /app and click the Formations tab on the right panel.
- You'll see two lists, Home Formation and Away Formation, with tabs to filter by All, Off (offensive), Bal (balanced) or Def (defensive) and arrows to turn the pages.
- Click a formation pill, such as 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
- A small window asks which side to apply it to: Home, Away, or Mirror to both. (Tick "Don't ask again" to skip the window next time.)
- Pick a side. The chips on the pitch snap into that shape, and undo history is cleared.
- Free and signed-out accounts see a "Pro Formations" card with an "Unlock with Pro" button instead of the lists. Pro or a trial is required to pick any formation.
Tips
- Small-sided formations (5v5 through 9v9) appear automatically once you switch the match size — you don't need to hunt for them separately.
How do I put my real players' names on the board instead of Player 1, Player 2?
Load your saved roster onto the board · Pro feature
- Create a team with players first at /team (this part of the app is Pro-only).
- Open the board at /app and click the Formations tab.
- If you have at least one saved team, a "Your Roster" section appears at the top with a Home and an Away dropdown.
- Pick a team for Home and/or Away.
- Your starting players' names paint onto the current formation; anyone left over fills the substitute bench below the pitch.
